New Post: How to use Single Connection String in multiple WSSF/WCF in Implementation Projects?

Hi All,

In our project , we are using WSSF tool for creating WCF services. To host the service WSSF host model is used. After generating the service WSSF host model generates a web.config file for each service model.

i.e if I have 5 WSSF implemenatation projects and I mapped 5 WCF services to them, I will have 5 web.config files.

In order to reach the DB, I need to place 5 connection strings in these 5 web.config files.

But I dont want to place the connection string in 5 places, because if i want to change the connection string in future , I need to change the "cn" in 5 places.

I dont want to do this.

How can i centralize this connection string and use them in all services?

Please Help.

Just search for "GAX programming recipes actions" or similar, and you will get a brief idea of Recipes and Actions. Regarding generating proxies for WCF, you can get code gen for that with WSSF loking in the Hands-on labs and documented samples.

This seem to be an issue with Visual Studio and how is handling the Template Parameters and in particular the $safeprojectname$ value located in the solution and project templates that use the WSSF package. I'm not sure which was the problem that caused this but I know some issues may happend when running side by side 2005 and 2008, in particular with both SDKs.

If possible, try installing WSSF in a VS2008+SDK only environment and check this out. As far as I remember this issue was not previously documented so take this with a grain of salt.

If you can't find any further solution or the above is not a likely scenario, you may try updating the .vstemplate files that use the "$safeprojectname$" parameter with a structiure that removes the extra postfixes. These files are located under "...\Guidance Package\Templates\Projects" and there look for the WCF.vstemplate template and "..\Guidance Package\Templates\Projects\WCFServiceImplementation\ServiceImplementation.csproj" project file.

Sorry but I got a couple more questions:

Is this your first installation of WSSF or you had a previous version before?
Do you have VS2008+SDK2008+Prereq or you have also VS2005+SDK2005 ?
Are you unfolding this template (running this recipe) in a C# solution or VB.NET?

1. Binary version.

2. I tried with other names and same result. I tried using just Foo and ended up with FooImpl.ServiceImplementation.ServiceImplementation.dll.

3. Got same behaviour.

I have already tried to download the source via the CodePlex website. When I browse the repository using Tortoise SVN I just see an empty folder. I get the same results using the CodePlex Client as well. Any other suggestions?

Some questions:

Are you ising the binary or source version?
Did you try with other names? (i.e. not using "Service" as prefix)
In that case, did you get the same behavior?

The name I use is "TestService" in the dialog box and the project structure is WCF.

When you run the wizard dialog for adding the project structure (ASMX or WCF) which is the name that you set?

Is it "TestServiceImpl"?

You can find it here for both VS2008 and VS2005 versions:

However, if you only want to get the WCF Security Analysis rules, you only need to copy that assembly to the Rules folder (same as Semantic library) and your're done. No need for source code.

Is it normal behaviour to get duplicate naming on the generated dlls (eg. TestServiceImpl.ServiceImplementation.ServiceImplementation.dll)? My first though was that I was naming the project TestServiceImpl.ServiceImplementation and then the Service Software Factory was adding the additional ServiceImplementation naming. However, when I double-checked my naming that was not the case. I tried the generation a couple of times with different naming, but with the same duplicate name dll result. When I go into the project details and look at the dll naming, sure enough it has the duplicate names in it. I can change the dll naming by changing the project properties, but is there a way to avoid this type of behaviour or is there a configuration change I can do? I used the vanilla install of the February 2008 VS 2008 edition with no customizations just out of the box.

I am attempting to integrate the WSSF: WCF Security guidance package into my VS2008 Professional solution but I am not able to run the WCF security analysis feature. I understand that I need to recompile the guidance package against my local FxCop assemblies in order to utilize this feature (and I have successfully accomplished this for the Service Factory: Modeling Edition "WCF Semantic Code Analysis" feature). However, this requires access to the specific guidance package source code. Where can I obtain the source code for the WSSF: WCF Security guidance package?

We first have to get GAX updated to VS2010 and we're in the process of doing that now. We hope to have early drops of GAX by the end of the calendar year so we can begin testing/migrating the factories and guidance packages. Our plan to have GAT/GAX and our 3 factories released within 30 days of the VS2010 release date.
